PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION
To become a registered radiographer a graduate of a JRCERT (Joint Review Committee of the Education of Radiologic Technologists) approved curriculum in Radiography is eligible and should take the national registration examination for Radiologic Technology given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). All states require radiographers to be registered. Some states require a state licensure. In most cases, to obtain state licensure, a radiographer must indicate they have an active status and and are in good standing with the ARRT. Maryland requires state licensure as does Virginia. The District of Columbia does not.

There are advanced examinations for registered radiographers who wish to become registered in CT, Mammography, MRI, Quality Control, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy.

SALARIES
Due to the extreme shortage in this field, salary ranges have increased as have sign-on bonuses and benefit offerings. Job placement and opportunities are extensive due to this shortage. Anyone who enters and successfully completes a radiology program will have many choices of employment not only in this area but nationwide.

Most newly graduated/registered radiographers are offered between $38,000 and $44,000 a year. Those who chose to work PRN (temps) are offered between $20 to $35 an hour.

Radiographers who cross train and become registered in other modalities typically see salaries increase in increments between $7-$15.00 an hour.

Sign on bonuses right now range between $1,000 to $6,000.

Benefits for full time and employees of Temporary agencies (except for those who work PRN independently) typically include vacation, sick, health and 401K benefits. Some facilities are offering tuition benefits. My students are being offered payment of their current tuition in exchange for a one year commitment at a facility. Condominiums at Ocean City for the summer in exchange for a summer commitment in Ocean City is another offer.
