  • General Description of the Career Field with Areas of Specialization

The Diagnostic Sonographer utilizes high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical diagnosis. Professional level of this health care service requires highly skilled and competent individuals who function as integral members of the health care team. The Diagnostic Sonographer must be able to produce and evaluate ultrasound images and related data that are used by physicians to render a medical diagnosis. The Diagnostic Sonographer must acquire and maintain specialized technical skills and medical knowledge to render quality patient care.

A broad and detailed knowledge of anatomy, a thorough working knowledge of principles of sonographic physics, and mastery of patient care procedures involved in the handling of the sick and injured are all necessary accomplishments for the competent sonographer. Good health, emotional stability, accuracy, and the ability to get along with people are essential. Since sonographers frequently work with seriously ill or injured patients, they should be endowed with a good measure of empathy and compassion.

  • Scope of Practice for the Diagnostic Sonographer is to be able to:
    1. Obtain, review and bring together pertinent patient history, physical examination, and supporting clinical data to facilitate diagnostic results.
    2. Perform diagnostic procedures by producing, and evaluating ultrasound images and related data that are used by physicians to render a medical diagnosis.

    3.   Provide interpreting physicians with an oral or written summary of technical findings.

    4. Provide patient and public education and promote principles of good health.

  • Description of the Academic Program leading to this Career Goal

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers are prepared in Associate Degree programs. An Associate Degree program can be completed as full-time student in two years or can be taken on a part-time basis completing general education requirements first. Graduates will be eligible to apply to take the national registry examination offered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) when they successfully complete the program.

The Certificate Program is designed for students who are already certified or registry eligible in an allied health career (i.e. RT, RN, PTA, etc.). An Associate Degree program can be completed as full-time student in two years.

  • Schools to which Montgomery College Students Transfer to Continue in this Career Field.

The area colleges to which Montgomery College graduates may be able to transfer credits in order to continue education for higher degree in the medical filed are Howard University, Medical College of Virginia, George Washington University and Thomas Jefferson University.
