Dr. Abanulo received her B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Temple University Philadelphia. Before joining the department, she taught electrical engineering courses and an introduction to engineering course at Temple University and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. She was also involved in a STEM outreach program for K-12 Engineering. She teaches Introduction to Engineering Design (ES 100), Scientific and Engineering Computation (ES 240), Digital Logic Design (EE 244) and Physics III for Engineers (PH-263).

Dr. Abanulo's research interests include speech (signal) processing and analysis for speaker recognition and speech enhancement, as well as STEM Education for Pre-College Students. She is currently a co-principal investigator for a speech recognition grant from the United States Air Force Research Labs. She is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a reviewer for the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).

Arya Akmal

Dr. Arya Akmal holds a B.S. and an M.S. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in computational nuclear physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joins the Department of Physics, Engineering, and Geosciences as an assistant professor. Dr. Akmal has co-authored research articles in a wide range of fields, including atmospheric radiative transfer and remote sensing, physical oceanography, spectroscopy of diffuse media, and thermodynamics of biological macromolecules. He contributed to the development of the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall (APR) equation of state for dense matter, a commonly used, realistic description of matter under extreme conditions such as that found in the interior of neutron stars.

His current research interests include mechanisms of the folding of biological macromolecules as well as numerical descriptions of planetary atmospheres and meteorology. He has taught at Montgomery College since the spring of 2007.

Nawal Benmouna

Dr. Benmouna holds a B.S. and M.S. in physics from American University and a PhD in high-energy nuclear physics from the Stanford Linear Accelerator in joint collaboration with American University. Dr. Benmouna joined MC in Fall 2006 at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus, and has been at the Rockville department since Fall 2009. Prior to joining MC, Dr. Benmouna was a postdoctoral research scientist at the George Washington University working in medium-energy nuclear physics.

Dr. Benmouna’s research interests are nuclear physics at all energy ranges, and physics education research.

Alan Cutler

Dr. Alan Cutler holds a B.A. in geology from Carleton College, an M.S. in geology from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D. in geosciences from the University of Arizona. Over his career, he has worked as a scientific researcher, exhibit developer, and science writer at the Smithsonian Institution and he taught at the University of Rochester, University of Chicago, National Louis University, and Northern Virginia Community College. Before joining the Department of Physics, Engineering, and Geosciences this fall as an associate professor, Dr. Cutler was a science writer and publications officer at the Carnegie Institution for Science. Dr. Cutler’s book, Seashell on the Mountaintop: A Story of Science, Sainthood, and the Humble Genius Who Discovered a New History of the Earth, was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers 2003 summer selection and won the National Association of Geoscience Teachers James H. Shea Award in 2008. His writings have appeared in Science magazine, the Washington Post, Geotimes, and numerous other publications.

Dr. Cutler’s primary research interests are in paleobiology, paleoecology, the history of geology, and the geology of Montgomery County. He also continues an active interest in science writing.

Dr. Day holds a B.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a M.S. from University of Maryland, College Park with a Ph.D. from American University. He has been with the department since 1967. Dr. Day has taught all levels of Physics and Physical Science courses over the years.

Dr. Day created the Sound & Light, and Engineering Computing courses, and was a co-creator of the college's original program in computer graphics. He is the Rockville coordinator for the  CSEM scholarship program  (Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Carrie Fitzgerald

Dr. Fitzgerald received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Stetson University. She joined the department during the Fall 2009 semester. In addition to teaching, she is also a senior scientist at National Security Technologies Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL) where she serves both as a support to the National Nuclear Security Administration’s emergency response teams and as a researcher investigating advanced detector technologies. She was awarded a National Research Council Associateship with the Space Sciences Division at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Her research at NRL involved the development of a silicon Compton imager for the detection of nuclear materials. She was also involved in a public outreach grant awarded by the NASA Office of Space Science in collaboration with the Maryland Science Center which provided students and adults an introduction to gamma-ray imaging and high-energy solar astronomy.

We welcome Carrie to the MC Family. Dr. Fitzgerald maintains a relationship with MSC through guest speaking events and volunteer work in the center’s observatory and planetarium. She was also recently accepted into the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's volunteer docent program.

Professor Garrison-Mogren holds a B.S. from Clarkson University and a M.S. from Syracuse University. He joined the department in Spring 2006 semester. Prior to joining us Professor Garrison-Mogren was Professor and department chair at the Montgomery College Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus where he taught chemistry, engineering, and physics courses.

He was an international service engineer for Westinghouse Power Service Company. His research work at Syracuse was in studying the kinetic properties of molecules in free molecular flow inside capillaries. He designed, organized, and built the graduate and undergraduate mechanical engineering laboratories at Johns Hopkins University. At the Maryland Science Center, he worked with the educational programs and advised on various technical questions in developing the programs.

He has since been a consultant engineer on the mechanical analysis of scaling down of chemical reactions in microplates, lifespan of flexing fiberglass plates, and mechanical properties of elastic membranes. He is currently working on design of residential energy systems (solar photo-voltaic systems, ground loop HVAC, energy efficient residential construction). Professor Mogren is also the faculty advisor for the Montgomery College chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA).

Dr. He received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a B.S. degree in applied mechanics from the National University of Defense Technology, China. She joined the department in the Fall 2005 semester. Dr. He worked in the aerospace industry for five years where her duties included mechanical design, thermal stress, and heat transfer analysis of rocket engines. Prior to joining Montgomery College, Dr. He was an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Lake Superior State University, where she taught the complete range of general engineering courses and supervised senior research projects involving the development of an underwater robotic arm and associated control systems.

Dr. He’s research work includes the design of mechanical testing and numerical modeling on biomaterials and biomechanical design for the chromatography column, which had been collaborated with Holland Laboratories (of American Red Cross) in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. He is a member of the Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, and the International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue.

Dr. Hou holds a B.S. from National TsingHwa University Taiwan and a M.S. and Ph.D. form Ohio State University. He joined the department in Fall 2002. After completing his degrees, Dr. Hou taught Mechanical Engineering for more than ten years at Howard University. He also has five years experience working in the aerospace industry and for the federal government as a computer systems engineer.  He has teaching responsibilites primarily in Intro to Engineering (ES100), Numerical Computation (ES240), and the seminar for the CSEM scholars program (PC169).

Dr. Hou's research interests are in CAD/CAM, robotics, solid mechanics and engineering education.

Charles Kung

Dr. Kung received his M.S. in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Ohio State University. He joined MC in 1987. He has taught courses in multiple departments including courses in Computer-Aided Design, Automation and Control, Computer Applications, Computer Science, Math, Physics, and Engineering. Dr. Kung has enjoyed teaching courses at all levels ranging from the developmental courses at MC to a graduate course at Howard University. His industrial experience includes nuclear power plant simulator design at Singer, space structural designat NSI/Goddard, army water transport design at Vitro, power plant renewal at Bechtel, and software development at AutoDesk. He is proud of all his industry experiences - those of a CAD operator, a designer, an engineer, a contractor, and an entrepreneur.

Dr. Kung likes to design and operate radio controlled flying machines. Recently, he converted his 1977 Sig Kadet to electric.

Dr. Li holds a B.S. from Delaware State University, a M.S. from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, M.S. from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. He joined the department in Fall 2004. Prior to that Dr. Li has taught physics and developmental chemistry at Fayetteville Tech., was Visiting Lecturer of Physics at North Carolina State University for several semesters, and also was Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Elon University.

Dr. Li has worked as a research assistant for Cotton Incorporated on a project which involved data analysis and modeling of the engineered fiber properties of cotton formation into yarn. Dr. Li has research interests in mathematical physics and physics education.

Professor Restorff holds a B.A. from Central Connecticut State College and an M.S.from University of Maryland, College Park. She has been a member of the department since 1977. For much of her career Professor Restorff has also served as a summer lecturer of physics at UMCP.

Dr. Williams holds a B.A. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania, a M.A. and a Ph.D. both in Physics from The American University. He has taught from high school level to Professor at the college level including: T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Northern Virginia Community College - Annandale, The American University, and Trinity University. The emphasis of his M.A. research dissertation is in Acoustical Physics and, as such, his interest in music has always been part of his education and life.

Dr. Williams is a member of the Acoustical Society of America and continues his interest in music by participating in various activities. His current teaching responsibilities will be in physics.

Dr. Xiang hold a B.S. Jiaotong University (China) and a M.S. and Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania in Electrical Engineering. She joined the department in Fall 2003. Tom Warning

Mr. Warning is the Instructional Lab Coordinator for Physics and Engineering. His responsibilities include lab set-up and take down, inventory control, equiment maintenance and replacement, and general instructor support as it pertains to lab courses. Mr. Warning has a BA in Speech Communications and Theatre from The College of the Ozarks in Missouri and a BS in Geology plus a Masters in Education from the University of Iowa. He has taught High School Biology, Environmental Science, and Heath as well as Middle School Earth Science, Life Science and Social Studies. Mr. Warning has also worked in the construction trades and was a licensed journyman plumber for 10 years.

Kimberly Kelly

Ms. Kelly is the Instructional Laboratory Coordinator for Geosciences. She is responsible for the setup and maintenance of all equipment and materials for geology, meteorology, and astronomy classes. She also typically supervises a staff of two or three student assistants who help with the weekly lab setups and care of equipment. Kim has a B.S. in Secondary Earth Science Education from the University of Pittsburgh.

William (Bill) Schuster

Mr. Schuster is the departmental Shop Technician and provides Engineering Shop support to the ES100 classes. He shares the operation of the shop’s 3D Dimension Printers and CNC equipment to give students a view of industry activity in an academic environment. Mr. Schuster has duel Journeyman status. As a Machinist he applied the trade for a Naval Nuclear supplier. As a Tool, Die & Gauge maker, he applied his trade in the transportation industry. His outside interests are aviation and bicycling.

The permanent staff keeps the department running from day to day with the assistance of a group of student aides. There will typically be from 6-8 such employment opportunities available in any given semester. Each of the staff members screens, hires, and supervises the aides in their own particular area. However, they are all generally aware if any openings exist anywhere in the department.
