Office of Student Financial Aid


1. When using ANY internet resource for scholarships, use only programs that are free.

2. Do not use any programs that ask for personal information from you ( home address or credit card number) beyond your name and e-mail address.

3. On many sites, listing your home address is optional - skip it unless you want to be flooded with mail.

4. We recommend that you set up a separate e-mail address on a free service like Hotmail, Yahoo, or Google, just for the purpose of college business (searching for schools, scholarship searching).

Please note that there are other grants and or scholarships sponsored by different internal and external agencies and departments.This listing is intended to inform you about general sources of grants and to link to other sources that may be useful to MC students. If we have date sensitive information of general interest to our financial aid students, we try to link to that material.


Academic Potential

In order to qualify for this grant/scholarship, you must be an incoming graduating high school senior from a public Montgomery County high school.

You also must be nominated from your school. One student (usually a student with the highest GPA choosing to come to Montgomery College) is selected from every public high school in Montgomery County to receive this scholarship.

The grant includes money for tuition and fees for one year of full-time study (two semesters), but does not cover books and/or supplies.


Academic Specialty Scholarship

The BOT scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors who will be entering one of our twenty six (26) degree programs.

You must complete a separate application for this scholarship and submit it the appropriate official at the high school in which you are currently enrolled to receive the nomination. Please contact the Office of Admissions at Montgomery College, (240) 567-5039, for more information.

Board of Trustees (BOT) Grant(s)


Need-Based: Board of Trustees (BOT) grants are administered by Montgomery College. In order to qualify, you must be a Montgomery County resident and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 2.0.

You must have financial need to receive this grant. The maximum amount of need-based BOT grant you can receive each year varies. (The average maximum award in 2008 - 2009 was $1,500.) This grant can not be used to pay for fees and cannot be used to qualify for a book credit.

Overview of DC Tuition Assistance Grant


DC Tuition Assistance Grant Program (DCTAG)


The DC OneApp deadline is June 30.

DC Tuition Assistance Grant Program (DCTAG) and DC Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (DCLEAP)

 

DCTAG students must be enrolled for for a minimum of 6 credits. Grants of up to $10,000 may be awarded toward the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition at public four-year colleges and universities throughout the US, Guam and Puerto Rico. The grant can provide up to $2,500 per academic year toward tuition at private colleges in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area, private Historically Black Colleges and Universities nationwide, and two-year colleges nationwide.

DCTAG is not need - based and DCTAG is not merit-based. Recipients of the grant may attend institutions of higher learning in 47 states and the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands. DCTAG is a grant and as such does not have to be repaid.


DCLEAP awards up to $1,500 per year toward the total cost of attendance at public and private colleges and universities in the United States, Guam and Puerto Rico. District of Columbia residents, 24 years of age or younger, attending public and private colleges and universities in the District may be awarded up to $5,000. Awards are limited to a maximum of six (6) years from the date of the student’s first college semester, for a lifetime maximum of $9,000.

Awards will be reduced for less than full-time enrollment, with no eligibility below the half-time level. Awards do not cover summer or mini-terms. DC Leap is available to DC residents 24 years of age or younger attending an eligible college or university in the District of Columbia.  


All awards are paid directly to the eligible institution; and there will be no summer school awards. Generally, a student must be registered at least half time (6 billing hour credits or more) to qualify.


Application Procedures
The DC OneApp is always available to be completed by January 1st.
The DC OneApp deadline is June 30th.

Completing the DC OneApp is a three-step process that requires:

1 Completing the DC OneApp website
2 Completing the FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov 
3 Providing the DC OneApp supporting documents


Remember: All applications must be completed by June 30th. Students who complete the process after theJune 30 deadline will be wait-listed and may not receive the award.

Foundation Scholarships


Many organizations and businesses offer scholarships to Montgomery College students through the Montgomery College Foundation Scholarship Program. These are available for students in a variety of fields, and requirements may vary. Applications for fall are available in the spring.

Applicants are also encouraged to complete the FAFSA so that financial need can be determined, since some scholarships require financial need. You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if your cumulative grade point average is 3.0, you enroll for at least six (6) credit hours per semester, and you are a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.

Recipients of a Foundation scholarship award must agree to the following conditions: 1) send a letter of thanks to the scholarship sponsor; 2) send a copy of the thank you letter to the Financial Aid Office; 3) sign an agreement to attend a meeting with the sponsor club or business, if requested.

Scholarship recipients are also invited to participate in a reception sponsored by the College to thank and promote the scholarship program.

Maryland State Scholarships

Students must officially accept the awards by signing the award letter, indicating which college they will attend and mailing it to the MD Higher Education Office in Annapolis MD. (The address is on the award letter)

The State of Maryland awards scholarships and grants to Maryland residents who attend Maryland colleges or universities, public or private. Generally, a student must be registered at least half time (6 billing hour credits or more) to qualify. It is recommended that the FAFSA or renewal FAFSA be filed between January 1 and March 1 each year.
The federal processor must receive it no later than March 1 to receive the fullest consideration for State grants.
NOTE: Filling out your tax return first will make completing the FAFSA easier. However, if you or your parents won’t have your current year tax returns done before the March 1 deadline, use last year’s returns to carefully estimate your answers on the FAFSA. You can correct them later.
Need-Based Grants
The Howard P. Rawlings Educational Excellence Awards:

Who may apply? Current high school seniors who will complete a college preparatory program or a student who graduated prior to the current academic year who provides written documentation explaining why they were unable to attend college within one (1) year of graduating from high school.
How to apply: Complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and complete and file the Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access (GA) Grant application.

Students attending four-year institutions will be awarded an EA Grant equal to 40% of OSFA adjusted need.  Students attending community colleges will be awarded an EA Grant equal to 60% of OSFA adjusted need.  The minimum annual award amount is $400 and the maximum award is $3,000. Should you be offered and accept certain State scholarship awards, your EA Grant will be recalculated. You may hold the EA Grant with all State awards except the Guaranteed Access Grant and Part-Time Grant. The total dollar amount of all State awards may not exceed your cost of attendance as determined by your school’s financial aid office, or $19,000, whichever is less. All financial aid received, including State aid, may not exceed your cost of attendance.  Funds may not be available to award all eligible students.

Legislative Scholarships

Complete and file the FAFSA by March 1. Contact your delegates in February for further instructions. Some awards are selected by your state Senator, and/or Delegate, depending on the voting district in which you live. Those state representatives selecting their own awardees have additional applications for you to complete.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Students and their parents (if the student is a dependent student) must be Maryland residents. You must enroll at a two-year or four-year Maryland college or university as a full-time or part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student, or attend certain private career schools.

Pell Grant

Federal Pell Grants do not have to be repaid. They are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor degree (in the United States or abroad). In order to receive a Pell Grant, you must have demonstrated financial need.

You may receive a Pell Grant as long as you are enrolled in a degree or an eligible certificate program and are taking at least one (1) credit. You may not be eligible for a Pell Grant if you are below half time enrollment (under six (6) credit hours), but you may check with the Financial Aid Office to confirm your individual eligibility.

The maximum amount of Pell Grant you can receive each year is determined by the amount of funding Congress allocates to the program each year. For the 2004- 2005 school year, if you are eligible, you may receive up to $4,050 as a full time student. The grant is applied first to tuition and fees. Any remaining Pell funds over and above the amount you owe the college may be distributed to you for your school related expenses.

Please note: If you register for any classes after the 100% refund period at Montgomery College, you will not be eligible for additional Pell Grant for those classes.

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) does not have to be repaid. The program is designed for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need.

Priority is given to those students who receive a Pell Grant and have the lowest EFC's (Expected Family Contribution). The amount of grant available to students is determined by the amount of federal funding given to the school for the academic year.

Awards at Montgomery College generally range from $200 to $1,000 per school year.

 

The Office of Student Financial Aid maintains a listing of scholarship opportunities on bulletin boards adjacent to the Financial Aid offices.

Other places to look for scholarships include our - MC web scholarship search as well as your local library, the Montgomery College Career and Transfer Center on each campus, the Internet, and local clubs and civic organizations.


TEACH Grants

The Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program provides non-need based grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a high-need field in a public or private school that serves students from low income families.
Do I Qualify?
Approved applicants must:
• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen without a bachelor degree (U.S. or any country).
• Meet all other requirements for Federal student aid.
• Be enrolled in the MC Teacher Education Transfer Programs in Mathematics (605), Physics (603), or Spanish (602). (These are the only programs currently approved by the U.S. Department of Education for TEACH grants at MC.)
• Score above the 75th percentile on one of the batteries of the SAT or ACT
OR
Have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3.25 from high school or college if the student has started college. (Official, final high school transcripts must be submitted to the MC Office of Student Financial Aid. MC GPA will be used for current students.)

Go to the federal financial aid web site to complete your FAFSA online. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and name MC to receive a copy of the results. (Title IV Code 006911) Get the directions on how to complete your MC financial aid file by downloading required forms from the secure web site MYMC. Register, attend and pass your classes. Courses must be taken for credit and must lead to a degree or an eligible certificate.
